Dr. Brophy is the Jerome J. Gilden\, M.D. Distinguished Prof essor of Orthopedic Surgery\, chief of th e Sports Medicine Service\, and director of the Orthopedic Clinical Researc h Center at the WashU Medicine and chief medical officer and orthopedic sur geon for St. Louis City SC (Major League Soccer).
As a board certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty c ertification in sports medicine\, his clinical practice focuses on the trea tment of shoulder and knee injuries in patients from all sports and walks o f life. Dr. Brophy has been named to the St. Louis Best Doctors since 2009 and a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2019. He serves as a team physician for the St. Louis Blues\, was a team physician for the St. Louis Rams\, and is Chair of the NFL's Musculoskeletal Research Committee.
He served as deputy edito r of sports medicine for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons\, director of the sports medicine Fellowship at WashU from 2018-22 \, on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) from 2016-18.
He graduated from Stanford University\, where he played on the men’s soccer team\, with degrees in electrical engineering\, industrial engineering and economics. A fter earning his medical degree from the Washington University School of Me dicine in 2001\, he completed a residency in orthopedic surgery and a fello wship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special S urgery in New York\, NY.
His clini cal interests focus on the knee and shoulder\, particularly knee ligament s urgery\, including ACL and PCL reconstruction\, meniscus surgery\, includin g repairs and transplantation\, and cartilage repair surgery such as microf racture\, OAT\, MACI and osteochondral allograft as well as shoulder stabil ization\, labral repair and rotator cuff repair. A former collegiate and pr ofessional soccer player\, he has a special interest in the treatment and p revention of injuries in soccer athletes.
